Staff Position Opening: Program Coordinator

The Purpose: Mile in My Shoes seeks an individual with a passion for our mission to serve on our small staff as a full-time Program Coordinator. The mission of Mile in My Shoes is Running Together to Change Perceptions and Change Lives.

The Organization: Mile in My Shoes (MiMS) brings people from diverse backgrounds together through the power of running. Our teams of Resident Members and volunteer Run Mentors have run thousands of miles side by side, completing races from one mile to a marathon, in pursuit of our vision: to build bonds, boost wellness, and spark social action by bringing the power of running to people experiencing homelessness and other barriers.

 Mile in My Shoes aims to:

  • Focus on health and well-being – physical, mental, and emotional

  • Increase self-esteem and leadership skills in all members

  • Promote understanding and friendship between people from diverse backgrounds

  • Change the way the Twin Cities community views people experiencing homelessness and returning from incarceration

Mile in My Shoes teams meet 2-3 times each week for group runs at homeless shelters/transition programs.  The teams train together for a goal race as well as participate in regular social events.  

The Position:  The ideal candidate will be outgoing, organized and have a passion for building and maintaining interpersonal relationships. The Program Coordinator will report directly to the Executive Director and be responsible for managing the day-to-day logistics of our program, managing the program activities and providing direct support to the volunteers who run each of our MiMS teams. The Program Coordinator will also prioritize equity, access and inclusion in programming with a dedication to constant improvement.

This individual will interact with staff, volunteers, and Resident Members in a fast-paced environment, sometimes under pressure, while remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient with a high level of professionalism. The ability to be organized and proactively communicate about tasks and responsibilities is very important. Additionally, regular attendance at MiMS runs is required to perform this role.

Tasks related to the role include, but are not limited to:  

Run Mentor & Core Team management:

  • Conducting orientations and appropriate follow-up for new run mentors

  • Coordinating mentor appreciation and outreach events in the community to engage new volunteers, using creative and new approaches

  • Supporting all “core” run mentor teams, including planning and executing monthly core team meetings and trainings, as well as day-to-day logistical support

  • Regular attendance at weekly runs (early mornings/evening)

Residential Member Outreach/On-boarding

  • Coordinating monthly member recruitment events at each facility partner

  • Maintaining positive working relationship with facility staff, working with them to ensure teams have what they need to be successful

  • Distribution of gear to new Members

  • Monthly coordination of incentives earned by Members

Other logistical support:

  • Registering members for races

  • Working with Core Team Event Coordinators to coordinate payment, transportation, and other logistical support

  • Assisting core teams with collecting and organizing member feedback surveys/data entry

  • Communicating with program Alumni about races & events

  • Create daily content for MiMS Social Media accounts

Staff tables at community events to raise awareness about MiMS and/or in support of our established partnerships

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience with the homeless or another underserved population, in either a professional or volunteer capacity

  • Experience managing staff or volunteers

  • Bachelor’s Degree OR equivalent professional work experience in related fields

  • Strong writing and communication skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Google Drive, and common social media platforms

Position Specifics

Salary range: $35,000- $38,000 commensurate with experience

Other: Benefits stipend, vacation, flexible schedule

This position reports to the Executive Director. This position is full-time. Early morning, evening and weekend hours are often required and vacation blackout periods may apply. Currently, MiMS does not have a home office, so this position will require the ability to work remotely. This job description materially represents the responsibilities of the position; however, the Program Coordinator may be asked to perform other job-related tasks not specifically presented in this job description.
