Commitment Agreement
The goal of Mile in My Shoes is to create an environment where people can share the experience of running regardless of background, religion, race, sexual orientation, or other distinctions. By bringing together diverse populations through the power of running, we strive for all of our runners to recognize the qualities that make us similar, in order to foster wellness, empathy, and empowerment within individuals & communities.
As part of Mile in My Shoes, I commit to embodying and embracing our organizational values:
Prioritize Inclusion & Safety: We believe everyone should be able to run, and do so safely - especially those historically excluded from running spaces.
Making Mile in My Shoes a safe place for all, by not participating in violence or threatened violence (physical or verbal) toward others
Keeping Mile in My Shoes a place that is free of drugs and alcohol
Keeping myself and run partner(s) safe by staying with my partner(s) for the duration of the run (“no one runs alone”), wearing safety lights/gear before dawn and after dusk, and sticking to the assigned route and distance
Honoring the unique fitness abilities and efforts of my teammates
Bringing concerns to the attention of my Team Leader or a MiMS staff member so that it can be addressed
Show Up: We show up, are present, and honor the potential we see in ourselves and one another.
Participating in the runs and events I’ve agreed to, or letting either my Team Coordinator know when I’m unable to make it
Doing the best that I can with who I am and where I’m at
Coming to each run ready to engage not only physically, but mentally, including leaving music players and headphones behind
Attending team races and social events as often as I am able
Have an open & curious mindset: Genuine interest in one another, and our own willingness to be vulnerable, lead to community connectedness and shifts in perceptions.
Providing positive support to my teammates, leading by example, and embracing the differences I may find in others
Embrace the Challenge(s): We grow by being challenged. Whether it be a difficult conversation, workout, or mood, we commit to embracing the hard stuff in order to grow.
Be considerate of my teammates' individual beliefs and life experiences and be willing to explore any differences with an open mind
Expressing my views and concerns respectfully and listening openly when others express views and concerns
Recognize Our Collective Value: Every person brings to the circle their own unique lived experiences, and every person brings value. Therefore, everyone who joins us makes us better.
Using language that is respectful and free of racism, sexism, homophobia, or intolerance
Recognizing and appreciating the unique strengths, skills, and experiences each individual offers the team
If I receive Mile in My Shoes gear, I also agree:
I will not give away any MiMS gear I receive. I understand that I will not receive any replacement gear if it is lost or stolen.
If I leave the program, for any reason, before completing four runs with the team, I will return my Mile in My Shoes gear to an appropriate staff member or volunteer
In addition, I will abide by all expectations outlined in the Resident Member orientation guide or Run Mentor handbook, as well as all rules of the facility I run at while at Mile in My Shoes runs and events.
I have read the Mile in My Shoes Commitment Contract and understand that my continued participation is dependent on upholding the above commitments. I commit to doing my part to make MiMS a safe and welcoming place for all (sign form below).
